Chapters 3-4
In Chapter 3 David recalls an incident that happened at his home.David had gotten a splinter, and while he was dressing it he said he could have managed it himself if he had another hand. To his father this was equivalent to heresy. David is yelled at by his father and told to pray for forgiveness. That night he has a dream about Sophie the twelve-toed wonder being slaughtered like a calf by her father. I believe that this is foreshadowing, and that soon Sophie will be taking a dirt-nap. In Chapter 4 David's uncle finds him talking through his mind to all the other weird children, including his cousin Rosalind. His uncle tells him that he must never tell anyone about his special ability, and that he should not talk out loud while using it. Later we are told that there was a big battle between the Fringes people and the people from Waknuk. When they are done fighting David sees some of the Fringes people's leaders, and he is disturbed because one looks like his father. I think he is disturbed because seeing a whacko who looks like his father makes him empathize with the Fringes people a bit. Finally, David's dad has a hissy-fit because some guy bought some large horses that he thinks are deviations, but the government okayed. Dirty rotten government. I predict that it will soon be found out that Sophie has too many toes, and she will be killed. I think later on David and his group of telepaths will be found out and have to run off. I see some similarities between this book and the genocide that we watched in Hotel Rwanda, primarily the slaughter of minority groups.
