Chapter 5-6

Chapter 5 starts off with David and Sophie playing by a stream. Sophie takes a risk by taking off her shoes and going into the water with David. They come back a few days later, but while they are there they run into a boy named Alan. Alan discovers that Sophie has six toes, and to protect Sophie he fights Alan. Since David fights like a girl Sophie has to ghetto whack Alan in the head with a rock. Sophie gets a KO and when they go home and tell Sophie's parents they immediately start getting ready to leave. When David comes home the next day his father knows about the incident and was going to whip David. In Chapter 6 we find out the Sophie and her parents were all caught. It is not revealed to us yet what happened to them, but I think it is safe to assume they were all slaughtered. David then gets talking to Uncle Axle Rose about how he wants to run away. He tells David about what lies outside of Waknuk and the land inhabited by 'normal' people. He describes flourishing jungles which are made up of unidentifiable species that are all deviations.he tells David about the blacklands where nothing grows, and he tells him about other civilizations. all these civilizations would be considered by David's society to be mutants, but they all consider themselves to be closest to the true image. Uncle Axle tells David that nobody knows what the true image really is, and that his special ability might make him closer to it than everyone else. I think David does not really understand the depth of this statement. I think that later on David and his merry band of telepaths will set out to explore those far away lands in search of the city in David's dreams.

By the way, shoutout to whoever keeps viewing my blog from the Ukraine, stay heavy bro.

Chapters 3-4

In Chapter 3 David recalls an incident that happened at his home.David had gotten a splinter, and while he was dressing it he said he could have managed it himself if he had another hand. To his father this was equivalent to heresy. David is yelled at by his father and told to pray for forgiveness. That night he has a dream about Sophie the twelve-toed wonder being slaughtered like a calf by her father. I believe that this is foreshadowing, and that soon Sophie will be taking a dirt-nap. In Chapter 4 David's uncle finds him talking through his mind to all the other weird children, including his cousin Rosalind. His uncle tells him that he must never tell anyone about his special ability, and that he should not talk out loud while using it. Later we are told that there was a big battle between the Fringes people and the people from Waknuk. When they are done fighting David sees some of the Fringes people's leaders, and he is disturbed because one looks like his father. I think he is disturbed because seeing a whacko who looks like his father makes him empathize with the Fringes people a bit. Finally, David's dad has a hissy-fit because some guy bought some large horses that he thinks are deviations, but the government okayed. Dirty rotten government. I predict that it will soon be found out that Sophie has too many toes, and she will be killed. I think later on David and his group of telepaths will be found out and have to run off. I see some similarities between this book and the genocide that we watched in Hotel Rwanda, primarily the slaughter of minority groups.

Chapters 1-2

From what I have read so far, I believe that this novel is set after a nuclear holocaust. This nuclear holocaust has caused people and crops to grow with strange deformities. The people in this novel see these deformities and are determined to eradicate them so that they can maintain normality. The people call these mutations 'deviations', and they say that they are caused  by the devil. Whenever they find deformed crops or livestock they destroy or slaughter them. In the first chapter the main character, David, encounters a girl named Sophie. Sophie turns out to have six toes, to the society in which they live in this is unacceptable. Sophie's mother makes David promise never to tell anyone about Sophie. I predict the later in the book Sophie will be taken away because someone discovers she has six toes.
